Once upon a time, this flat was one large room in a much larger Georgian apartment, but in the two hundred years since it had been built, it had been turned into a bakery, back into flats, and subdivided.
The first move in this conversion, then, was to strip the space back to its original Georgian proportions, restoring a magnificent row of five tall windows looking down into the street.
Once this had been done, a piece of architectural furniture, lacquered red like a chinese cabinet, was installed right in the middle of this room, containing storage, bookshelves, a study, and a high platform bed.
This piece of furniture unfolds at will. In this way, it is possible to use the flat as a large single studio space for parties, to create one bedroom for normal usage, and another when guests come to visit.
